He completed his ophthalmology training at RP Centre, AIIMS, in 1997, and earned the FRCS from Glasgow in 2001. He was trained in public health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), London, where he completed his Master’s in Public Health for Eye Care with distinction. Presently, he is Director, Public Health and Projects, in the Dr Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital network and is also affiliated part-time with the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH) at LSHTM, London.
His work at SCEH includes planning, implementing, and monitoring the quality of public health interventions delivered through vision centres, secondary centres, and various projects. He has been instrumental in initiating an ROP program with the Delhi Government for Delhi Government hospitals on behalf of SCEH. Funding for this program came from USAID under its Child Blindness Program. With support from Orbis, he is leading a district-level program in Saharanpur for children's eye care. He is involved in training medical fellows in research methodology and eye care management fellows in public health and planning. He is one of the mentors in the eye care management training at SCEH and is involved in moderating and teaching a module in MSc Public Health for Eye Care at LSHTM, London.
He has led research on presbyopia, supported by the Livelihood Impact Fund and Peek. He is the India PI for a research project focused on productivity linked to near-vision glasses. This project is approved by HMSC. He has been invited to join the Economics for Eye Health Network and is involved in multiple collaborative studies with ICEH. He has multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals, including Lancet Regional Health, BMJ Open, BMJ Paediatrics Open, BMC, Ophthalmic Epidemiology, and IJO (ORCID ID - https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7687-0748).
His research publications cover diverse public health topics, including the need for screening children not in school, a model for door-to-door eye screening for children, validation of a new tool for pre-school screening, vision centres, ROP care, post-op infections at secondary centres, glaucoma screening in cataract camps, and eye care needs of truck drivers. He has also collaborated on multicentric studies on the equity of cataract services, the social cost of visual impairment and blindness in India, and the cost of identifying cataract and refractive error through different outreach approaches. He has been a reviewer for journals such as IJO and BMJ Open.
He has spoken at various national and international platforms. He was invited to serve as faculty in the education group at the Commonwealth Eye Health Consortium meeting in London in 2019. He received the Hooper Prize for the best dissertation in Eye Care at London School and the best paper at the VISION 2020 INDIA conference in 2018. He was the Chair of the Scientific Committee for the recently held annual conference of VISION 2020 India. He is on the board of VISION 2020: Right to Sight India and is Vice-President of the International Society of Geographical and Epidemiological Society (ISGEO).
